The Liu Shaochuang Research Group of the Institute of Remote Sensing Application of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, using satellite remote sensing technology, measured the length of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and obtained accurate data: The length of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is 1,710 kilometers.

The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal runs from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south, and connects the Haihe River, the Yellow River, the Huaihe River, the Yangtze River, and the Qiantang River to the five major river systems in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. It is the longest and oldest canal in the world. Together with the Great Wall, it was called the two great projects of ancient China.

In the current literature and literature, the data on the length of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is relatively confusing, such as the lengths of 1800 kilometers recorded in the “Encyclopedia of China” and “China Water Conservancy Encyclopedia”, etc., “Encyclopedic Knowledge Data Dictionary” and China. The length of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum etc. is 1,794 kilometers. Foreign materials, such as "Webster's New Dictionary of Geographical Names" and "Collins English Dictionary" generally use 1600 km or 1,000 miles. Like most rivers in the world, the chaos of the length data of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is also caused by differences in the measurement age and differences in length measurement techniques. In order to obtain more accurate and reliable length data, Liu Shaochuang's task force used satellite remote sensing technology to remeasure the length of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The length of 1710 kilometers of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is based on the junction of Wenyu River and Tonghui River in Tongzhou, Beijing, and is measured along the center line of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, with the Hangzhou Gongqiao Bridge as the terminal point.
